REFUGE
As we still find ourselves in the current shared reality of uncertainty and upheaval, it is necessary to center our intentions on amplifying the healing aspects of our work — all of our Work. Refuge is an event series at Bartram’s Garden, curated by noted Philly Area DJ, DuiJi 13. The positive healing energy generated as we come together to share music and fellowship is always a noted side effect of our gatherings.

Our Juneteenth/Father’s Day weekend event will be enhanced with live painting by @AnthonyMolden, storytelling by griots from Keepers of the Culture @kotcgriots, and the singular poetic presence of Ursula Rucker @urucker. We hope the coalescence of these artists will align with the sounds provided by @DuiJi13 and Supa Tang to provide a valuable holistic experience. We all need space and time to replenish ourselves in safety and sanity. We hope Refuge will serve this purpose.

What's your favorite okra recipe? Our #PlantSale f What's your favorite okra recipe? Our #PlantSale features okra plants from Sankofa Community Farm, ready to feed your family all summer long.

Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) is an ancient vegetable crop that was domesticated 7000-8000 years ago in West Africa and spread to The Sahel, eastern, and northern Africa through trade along the Nile. Since ancient times, it has been associated with good health and vigor. Its pods, leaves, and flowers are full of potassium, vitamins A and C, healthy fats, and PROTEIN. The whole plant is also used in herbal medicine, the mucilage being similar to Aloe vera gel.

Okra is eaten throughout Africa, Asia, and the Americas. In Africa, okra is often made into savory soups or fried. In the U.S. South, okra is paired with bean or field pea soups, breaded and deep fried, or stir-fried with onions, garlic, tomatoes and sometimes corn.

SHOP: https://bartramsgarden.org/shop (link in bio) for pickup at Bartram's Garden, or stop by the Welcome Center Monday-Saturday 9AM-4PM.
