Remembering Joe Syrnick (1946–2026)

February 4, 2026

It’s hard to spot Joe Syrnick in this photo, but he’s at the heart of it, in more ways than one.

The President and CEO of the Schuylkill River Development Corporation, Joe was the visionary engine behind the beloved Schuylkill River Trail, including the thoughtful efforts to extend and activate the trail inclusively as a welcoming place for all Philadelphians. The Bartram’s Garden team was saddened to hear of his passing on January 17, 2026.

Joe’s unwavering dedication shaped the Garden, especially thanks to the opening of the Bartram’s Mile Trail in 2017 and the South Mile extension to 61st Street in 2021–pictured above as Joe tirelessly offered a pre-opening tour to a group of staff, neighbors, and board members on a very hot day.

Of course, his ultimate achievement will come later this year with the long-awaited opening of the Schuylkill Crossings swing bridge connecting Southwest Philadelphia to Grays Ferry, Center City, and beyond. The bridge would not have been possible without Joe’s devotion and no-nonsense skill. And though it is hard to imagine celebrating the swing bridge without him, we know how eager he would have been to see neighbors enjoying the new trail connection: a fitting tribute to his extraordinary impact.

Our hearts are with Joe’s loved ones during this sad time.
