Women’s Letter Writing Workshop

During Ann Bartram Carr’s lifetime, it was a common practice to burn letters written by women as soon as they had been read once, lest they contain sensitive information that might cast their male relations in an unflattering light. The letters of Ann Bartram Carr—a revered botanist, illustrator and entrepreneur in her time—are missing, and all we have are the references made to them in letters written her male correspondents. Kalela Williams leads us in a workshop in which we grapple with Ann’s missing narrative voice and put ourselves in the complicated position of writing letters that will only be read once.
