William Bartram’s Travels: A Guided Literary Tour (a three-part class)

Professor Nancy Hoffman leads us in a group reading of selections from William Bartram’s profoundly unique Travels, one of the most important written works of American natural history. William’s writing on “whatever may contribute to our existence . . . whether it be found in the animal or vegetable kingdoms” ended up playing an remarkably prominent role in shaping hundreds of years of American literature. Wine & Cheese provided.

Nancy E. Hoffmann received her PhD. in 1996 from the University of Pennsylvania. She was Instructor in English, University of Pennsylvania, Critical Writing Program, 2000-2007. Nancy became an Instructor in English at Villanova University in 2008. Courses she has taught at University of Pennsylvania and Villanova University include Experimental Short Story; Creative Writing, Writing About Nature; Natural History and Environmental Literature of the 18th through 20th century; American Literature from the Revolution to the Civil War, and The Development of the American Short Story. She is one of the world’s foremost William Bartram scholars, having edited Bartram, The Search for Nature’s Design: Selected Art, Letters, and Unpublished Writings (Wormsloe Foundation Nature Book, 2010).
