May 22, 2021 @ 11:00 am - 2:30 pm

Bartram’s Garden
5400 Lindbergh Blvd.
Philadelphia, 19143 United States

**This event has been rescheduled from April 10.**

Celebrating The Original People: The Ancient Culture and Wisdom of the Lenni-Lenape People by Chief Quiet Thunder (Narrator, 1934-2020) and Greg Vizzi (Author)

Chief Quiet Thunder was a traditional Lenape Elder, a past Chief of the Nanticoke Lenni Lenape Tribal Nation of Bridgeton, NJ, and an important educator and keeper of Lenape culture on both sides of the Delaware Bay and beyond. The Original People is a recently-published autobiography and oral history in which the Chief shares stories of his own life and his extensive knowledge of broader Lenape history, worldviews and traditional ways of living.

11 AM-12 PM: Book signing with author Greg Vizzi. Greg will introduce the book with a brief talk at 11:00, followed by time for book signing. Books will be available for purchase. We will also have a limited number of signed books available for online purchase for those not able to attend in person. If you wish to purchase a copy of the book ahead of the event, it is available here – just be sure to allow time for delivery.

1 PM-2:30 PM: Walking tour with archaeologist and Bartram’s Garden Curator Joel Fry. As we move through the Garden, Joel will speak about the Indigenous archaeology of the site, which includes evidence of seasonal settlement near the water’s edge over thousands of years. Greg Vizzi will share relevant passages from The Original People in conversation with Joel.

A limited number of spots are available for in-person attendance. You can also join us virtually by watching and listening over Zoom or Facebook Live (links below).

For those hoping to attend in person, capacity is capped, so please register ahead of time using the registration link below. Please indicate whether you would like to attend the signing, the tour, or both.

RAIN DATE:
Sunday, May 23
Book Signing 10–11 AM
Tour 11 AM–12:30 PM

ADDITIONAL DETAILS:
The entire event will take place outdoors, with the option to move to our covered, open-air event pavilion in the case of light rain. If the forecast calls for a downpour, we may shift to the rain date above (note change in time). All attendees will be expected to wear face masks, share contact tracing information and sign a COVID waiver.

Since social distancing may make it harder to hear our guides during our tour, we recommend that you bring a pair of headphones with you so that you can tune into our Zoom audio feed on your phone. Please bring rain gear and comfortable walking shoes, as we will be traveling a few hundred yards on foot. ADA-accessible bathrooms will be available onsite. We’re happy to make accommodations for guests with mobility limitations. If you have questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out ahead of the event.

The livestream will automatically broadcast on the Bartram’s Garden Facebook page at the time of the event.
