Native Plants: A performance of the Poetry of Marianne Moore and William Carlos Williams

May 4, 2014 @ 9:00 am - 10:30 am

American poets Marianne Moore and William Carlos Williams both intellectually blossomed in Philadelphia, Moore at Bryn Mawr and Williams at Penn. In the 20th century they would come to define the voice of American Modernist poetry.  While many of their contemporaries expatriated to Europe, both Moore and Williams stayed put on American soil, carefully cultivating their gardens of verse into spectacular volumes of poetry.

The Rosenbach Museum and Library is home to Moore’s papers and re-created living room, and Bartram’s Garden was a site of inspiration for both authors.

In this program, we celebrate these two visionary authors, and what inspired their insatiable curiosity for the natural world.  Actors will perform Moore’s poem “Virginia Britannia” and Williams’ poems “The Yellow Flower” and “The Pink Locust” as well as read selections of their correspondence. The presentation will be followed by a discussion and a Q&A session.

The Rosenbach Museum and Library, located at 2008 Delancey Place in Philadelphia, will also host a second performance on Thursday, April 24 at 6:00 PM. For more information, visit: www.rosenbach.org/learn/events/native-plants.

This program was sponsored by Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

Free for Rosenbach and Bartram’s Members! General admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors/students. Advanced registration is recommended.
