Curator Joel Fry and the Bartram’s Garden boathouse staff will lead a paddling tour via kayaks along the Tidal Schuylkill from Bartram’s Garden to Gray’s Ferry and back.
Three adjacent Bartram family farms in Kingessing ran along the Schuylkill north from modern 56th Street to Gray’s Ferry. This kayak tour will head north from the dock and boathouse at Bartram’s Garden along the west shoreline of the river to Gray’s Ferry.
This route will follow most of the Bartram family farmland and the alignment of the Bartram’s Mile Trail, north to the future river crossing at Gray’s Ferry. Trail bridge construction is underway, using the piers and abutments of the old 1902 railroad swing bridge of the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad.
Kayaks, paddles, and lifejackets will be provided. This is a flat and calm stretch of river, so all skill levels are welcome! Expect moderate physical exertion and summer heat. Pre-registration is required and limited to 20 adults only. We have a limited number of single kayaks, so some guests will have to share a tandem kayak. Check out our boating FAQ for more information.
Please arrive at 4:15pm for launch by 4:30pm.
