An exploration in biodiversity, interactive species, urban ecologies and foraging.
“Honeybees & Mushrooms” is a two-season event featuring scheduled honeybee hive tours and mushroom hikes at Bartram’s Garden in the Spring and Fall of 2021. Presentations by Beth Teigan, founder of Philadelphia Mycology Club, and an open hive demo by Mark Berman of Anna Bee’s Honey (and Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild member) will explore the honeybee and mushroom relationship, focusing on seasonal changes in honeybee and fungal activity.

About the facilitators:
PMC was founded in 2018 by Bethany Teigen. Since then, our community of novice and experienced mycologists has grown to thrive in Greater Philadelphia. We work with many of the environmental education centers in Philadelphia to provide free and accessible mushroom guidance in an urban setting. We host group hikes, workshops, and trash clean ups year round. Bethany Teigen is an independent dog walker and citizen scientist who founded the Philadelphia Mycology Club in 2018 after finding some mushrooms coming up between the center city cobblestones. She also volunteers for Fungal Diversity Survey, a national non-profit dedicated to documenting and conserving the diverse macrofungi of North America
Mark Berman, of Anna Bee’s Honey, started his beekeeping adventure 6 years ago with his then 7-year-old daughter Anna on their South Philly rooftop. After the first year, they moved their hives to Bartram’s Gardens near Sankofa Community Farm. Each year they extract about 120 lbs of honey from their 3-4 colonies. Mark is also a member of the Philadelphia Beekeeper’s Guild. You can learn more about Anna Bee’s Honey on Facebook and Instagram @AnnaBeesHoney.
As of July 30, 2021, Bartram’s Garden again requires that all people wear masks in all of our indoor spaces. To help limit the spread of COVID, please follow the current City of Philadelphia guidelines for visiting an outdoor public space.
