What is the creative force of the Universe? Is the force that inspires a human to write poetry or music the same as that which inspires a plant to grow in a particular way? Data Garden will explore these ideas and more through QUARTET, an audio installation that gives plants the tools to play digital synthesizers.
Guests will be encouraged to accompany four large tropical plants fitted with specialized electronic sensors. The physiology of these living specimens will be converted into data by a computer. That data will then be translated into commands used to generate quadraphonic audio compositions in real time.
While the means of producing this music can be described in technical terms, the natural creative force generating this experience is less apparent. Data Garden invites listeners to explore QUARTET while examining their own views on the source of its creation.
Data Garden QUARTET has been supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage through the Philadelphia Music Project.
