Birding Smackdown!

April 25, 2014 - May 3, 2014

Do you have eagle eyes? Think you have what it takes to help your favorite historic site in West Philly win the First Annual Birding Smackdown? Bartram’s Garden and The Woodlands are joining forces in a brand new, out-of-the-nest competition to determine which site really is the hottest spot for birds and birders.

The site with the most variety of bird species reported during the competition will be declared the 2014 Smackdown Winner, and will receive bragging rights for 365 days! There are lots of great prizes for our birders, too, so stay tuned! This event is part of the 2014 Philadelphia Science Festival.

HOW TO COMPETE:

1) First, download the scorecard checklist for the site where you plan to bird.

Click here to download the Bartram’s Garden scorecard checklist.

Click here to download The Woodlands scorecard checklist.

Want to bird at both sites? That’s cool, too! Just keep your results separate and submit both scorecards at the end of the competition. (Don’t forget to sign the Release and Indemnification Agreement attached to each scorecard!)

2) Find a team, or bird solo

Combine your bird-watching results with up to 4 birds of a feather in your team, or go it alone and bird as an individual competitor.

3) Get to birding!

Pick just one site, or bird-watch at both, and track your results on the scorecard. Just be sure to keep your results for each site separate. Read the competition rules first and don’t disturb any habitats or animals while you’re out in the field.

4) Write it down

Track your results on the scorecard checklist. Just be sure to keep your results for each site separate. Submit your scorecard at the end of the week and keep your wings crossed for a winning count! Any bird you see or hear and can identify beginning at dawn on April 26 until dusk on May 4 can be included in your count.

All completed scorecards and forms must be received by 4 P.M. on Monday, May 5, 2014 to be considered. Send in your completed scorecard and signed release form(s) to or drop them off at the office of Bartram’s Garden or The Woodlands. Birding Smackdown winners will be announced on Friday, May 9th!
