Between
May 1998 and May 2000, the John Bartram Association received Franklinia Census surveys from 38 states, The District
of Columbia, and eight foreign countries.
More than 2,000 Franklinias
were reported growing at homes, commercial properties and public gardens around
the world.
Responses came from Maine to Florida and Pennsylvania to California. The most trees were reported in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and New Jersey. Outside the U.S., Great Britain, Canada, New Zealand, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland and Ireland all reported Franklinias.
The oldest documented Franklinias reported are growing at Harvard University's Arnold Arboretum, where two Franklinias date from 1905. These trees were propagated from an ancient specimen at Bartram's Garden.
